Welsh Kennel Club 2008 Critique

I would like to thank all those exhibitors who chose to give me an entry and the sporting and enthusiastic support from the ringside for the class placings – thanks to everyone concerned, it was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to my most able stewards. I was particularly pleased with my top winners as they fit the bill of a Deerhound that could do its original job without exaggeration of any sign of Wolfhound type. I also thought my Minor Puppies boded well for the future.

MPD (3) 1 & BP Hird’s Cloweswood Acer. A very dark black, but will no doubt pale as he matures. Masculine head with the darkest of eye, strong neck and well laid shoulder, true front and rear and all the body you would expect for his age. Moved very well for a puppy. 2 Parsons & McKinnon’s Claionaiglen Finnan. Not as well grown as the winner, but a nice sort of puppy, lovely head and expression and moved with purpose. 3 Rhodes and Spencer’s Gentom Rough Rider. PD (1) Rhodes and Spencer’s Gentom Renown. At a difficult age, plenty of bone and strong rib cage. Moved adequately – I would have preferred a little more weight for his age.

JD (2,1) 1 Meakes & Morris’ Claonaiglen Gelly at Cadmore. Not big but no sign of femininity. Strongly made and well balanced, in excellent muscular condition. Moved well. PGD (10,5) 1 Johnson’s Claionaiglen Bruar. Strong masculine head with large eyes and powerful jaw. Good body shape and well angulated. Particularly liked his side gait. 2 Samway's Ghiltan Peregrine cum Cassacre. Very similar to the winner – a dog who needs to move out more to make the best of his movement. Looked good standing. 3 Carr’s Marandike Star Attraction.

LD (6,1) 1 Dog CC & Res. BOB Owen and Brodie’s Wolfcastle Wood Melick. I am pleased to see how this dog has matured since I last judged him. An impressive, masculine dog with a lovely overall picture and no exaggeration. Not the largest but still very masculine dog with a beautiful head and expression, strong neck into well laid shoulders. Correct body and hindquarters. A real joy to watch on the move. I am sure it will not be too long before he gains his crown. 2 Day’s Demerlay Dorian Gray at Celticmoon. A very similar dog to the winner but would like to see a little more refinement in his head. In excellent muscular condition, and well presented. 3 Llewelly’s Kilbourne Macallan at Matahari.

OD (5,1) 1 & Res. CC Girling’s Pyefleet Qwilliam. A dog I judged as a puppy and was not disappointed by how he has grown. Was not overly co-operative and a big boy to handle. A very well balanced construction of larger type than the CC but a little less refined in the head. He has the most beautiful free flowing movement – a joy to watch. 2. Wiggan’s Killoeter Grilse. Another nice dog of smaller type. Not quite as good in front, pleasing head and expression, sound construction, well presented. 3 Spencer’s Gentom Orlando at Talgavar.

MPB (2) 1 Hird’s Cloweswood Scilla. A very feminine puppy but not lacking in any substance. Very well constructed – the same comments can be made as her brother. I wish them both a winning future. 2 Merrick’s Cloanaiglen Shiel. Equally feminine, though lighter built today than the winner. Still a very nice puppy and unfortunate to meet the winner.

PB (1) 1 Withheld. 2 Finigan’s Greyflax Mimosa.

JB (2,1) 1 Mansall & Duddell’s Canerikie Coco Chanel. A glamorous bitch, living up to her name. I loved her head and expression with nice front construction, correct feet. Well developed body with all the right angles. Sound on the move.

PGB (11,5) A very nice class of bitches. 1 & Res. CC Owen & Brodie’s Marandike Ebonys Choice to Wolfcastle. A lovely feminine bitch with beautiful head, dark eye and nice ears. Strong neck and well laid shoulders. In fantastic muscular condition. Movement was a joy to watch. 2 Wiggan’s Kilbourne Firebird of Lodhainn. Another nice bitch of similar type to the winner, but just preferred the overall balance of the winner. 3 Conway & Johnson’s Canerikie Cranberry Cooler.

LB (8,2) 1 Gomm’s Canerikie Cookie Crusher to Wildtor. A truly lovely Deerhound and a joy to go over. Feminine head, neat ears, strong neck, well defined shoulders and upper arm. Good construction. Pushed hard to Res. CC. 2 Girling’s Pyefleet Rokesby. Not as co-operative as I would like, but still a very shapely, quality Deerhound. Move with purpose and ease. 3 William’s Kilbourne Iduna at Inverclyde.

OB (5,1) 3 very lovely bitches. 1 Bitch CC & BOB Parsons and McKinnon’s Ch Claonaiglen Orrin. A truly stunning bitch to see, and to go over. From nose to tail oozed with quality and correctness in construction, condition and movement. I wish she was mine. 2 Hird’s Claonaiglen Albyn at Cloweswood. Another very beautiful bitch from this kennel about whom the same comments apply. A difficult decision. 3 Lady Guise’s Saintvalery Anticipation.
